Brazil Now in The Energy Top Ten
According to a recent report by the Paris-based IEA (International Energy Agency) Brazil is now the tenth largest consumer of electrical energy in the world. The figures show that in the last decade usage went up by slightly over the world average increase of 30%.
The latest statistics show that the current total consumption is running at 404 Billion Kilowatts per year. The total is arrived at by adding domestically produced power to imports then taking away exports.
It’s interesting to compare Brazil with other leading BRICS countries.

By comparison, its increase is modest. In the same period, China increased by over 150% and India by nearly sixty-five.
Brazil is surprisingly well-placed for a sustainable economic (and therefore investment) future. Regarding the country, the IEA points out that it is also a world leader in production from renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric power and biofuels. According to the agency, 45% of all the energy produced in Brazil is obtained from renewable sources. This compares well with the rich OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries where the percentage is only 8%.
